Information about your sculpture
Each sculpture is unique and if maintained well it will give you years of enjoyment in your garden. I would not recommend keeping your sculpture inside as it is not seasoned wood so would crack quickly due to the rate it will dry out.
When you receive your sculpture I will have treated it with a wood preserver and oil. I use a good quality decking oil as its deep penetrating formula feeds the wood and restores the natural oils lost through weathering. It leaves a natural looking finish and the carving is nourished and protected. I would recommend giving it extra coats over the next few months and then at least yearly to reduce the rate and amount of cracking that will occur.
Protect the sculpture from excessive sunlight and heat. Try to place it in a shady spot in your garden as excessive heat in the summer months can rapidly dry out the timber and cause excessive cracking. If the weather becomes very hot then oil more frequently.
In winter try to place your sculpture under cover, but still outside. Ice and snow can penetrate cracks and force them apart when freezing. Do not fill cracks and splits, as they will open and close depending on the weather and moisture in the air. Some cracks will appear and not close up, but this is the natural property of wood and can add beauty and character to an individual piece.
Do not place your sculpture on soil; place small stones under it to raise it from the ground, or place on paving with good drainage. This improves air flow and and reduces the chances of the wood rotting from the base.
